March 6 | Clipping coupons translate to $3,013.81 for local school !
Students and parents from Howard Gardner School banded together, collected and attached over 5,200 coupons at Gerrity’s with proceeds directed to their schools’ educational programs. This lucrative 8 week venture concluded with a check presentation last week totaling $3,013.81 at Gerrity’s Clarks Summit store.
(Scranton, PA). A few years ago, Gerrity’s kicked off a very unique fundraising campaign. Since its inception, many non-profit organizations have signed up for this rewarding and profitable fundraiser and to date the Howard Gardner School has participated twice in the program in which they collected over $12,000 with their combined efforts.
The proposal is quite simple. A group of volunteers from a non-profit organization clips coupons from the local paper, and then head to Gerrity’s where they attach the coupons to the corresponding products with a specially designed sticker. An informational poster is displayed at the participating stores describing the purpose of the fundraiser as well as asking the customer to voluntarily split the value of the coupon with them. A special code has been set up at the checkouts whereby if the customer agrees, then the coupon is scanned and half of the coupons’ value is deducted from the customer’s order and the other half is tallied for the organization. So far, results have been outstanding and very profitable.
The total amount collected for Howard Gardner from Gerrity’s Keyser Avenue and Clarks Summit stores, generated $3,013.81. In retrospect, Joyce “Mom” Fasula, is still excited. “We value working together with our local community since we began as a neighborhood store.” The customers save money when they buy the product and the organization receives added revenue that some desperately need. It’s a win for everyone.
Gerrity’s is the largest family owned and locally owned supermarket business in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The company operates in Lackawanna and Luzerne counties and consists of nine supermarkets and a corporate office. The company is owned by Joyce “Mom” Fasula and family and is part of the Shursave Supermarkets Co-op. Gerrity’s employs over 900 people in Lackawanna and Luzerne counties and has been in business since 1895.

The group participated in their local neighborhood Gerrity’s Coupon Fundraising campaign where the organization clipped coupons, had volunteers attach the coupons to the corresponding product, then split the ‘cents off’ savings with the customer. – a venture that makes good community sense and plenty of dollars too.
